Exaltation of the Holy Cross-feast established in memory of the independence of the cross, which occurred in 326 year in Jerusalem around Mount Calvary-the place of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. On the eve of the feast in the temple was held Vigil with dedication of bread, and in the day of the feast – Liturgy and prayer service.
Matins Gospel was read in the chancel. During the great doxology when singing “Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us” Cross was carried out. When singing the troparion “Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine heritage” archpriest George (Kipa) delivered a Cross to the middle of Temple and placed it on the lectern. Then it is finished three singing the troparion “Cross Thy worship, o master, and Holy resurrection of Thy praise”, during which all three carried bows.
On this day, the cross of the Lord glorified, image fidelity to God before mortal end:
“Take up your cross and follow me” (Matthew 16.24)
-the only way you will avoid in this life the power of the devil.
After the Liturgy was made a celebratory prayer.
The feast of the exaltation of the Cross of Christ, dedicated expresses liturgical aspect of honoring Christian Golgof’s Cross as an instrument of the salvation of mankind. The title refers to the ceremonial raising of the Cross after discovering it in the ground. This is the only feast (t. (e). one of the twelve greatest holidays annual cycle), which were not only events, but the New Testament and later from the field of church history.
The birth of the Virgin Mary, celebrated six days earlier, is the threshold of the mystery of the incarnation of God on Earth, and Cross announces his future victim. Therefore, the feast of the cross also stands at the beginning of the Church year (September 14/27).
